“Jesus teaches us the Beatitudes because they speak a truer truth about what happiness is. Want to be happy? Choose to live differently than what the world sells as happiness.” ~jdj
Every day we are told lies. There is the blatant fake news on social media. There are the “facts” that are twisted to support extreme viewpoints on both the right and the left. There are the edited videos and photo shopped images that distort perspectives. Much of this kind of fakery can be detected by the observant and the questioning. The subtle lies are more difficult to detect: the lies we are sold about what matters, how to live, and who to be.
Some tell the lie that what matters is how impressive we are. Another lie: a big bank account equals a big life: buying power is life power. Such lies promise happiness. And such lies fail to deliver. The United Nations recently released their annual World Happiness Report. The United States missed the top 10 list. The report noted the epidemic of addictions in the United States as indicative of our national “dis-ease.” A shared characteristic of the countries in the top 10, headed by Finland, is highly valuing community and relationships.
It is time to shift our happiness paradigm to the relational and spiritual model that Jesus teaches in the Beatitudes, our text for Sunday from Matthew 5:1-12. The happiness paradigm that Jesus teaches doesn’t try to “sell us” on anything. Jesus simply opens his Sermon on the Mount with descriptions of happiness that are paradoxical yet true: “Happy are the poor in spirit, the grieving, the humble, the hungry, the merciful, the clear hearted, the peacemakers…”
The happiness that Jesus teaches is an invitation to hold dear to truth and trust. This Sunday we’ll look at both the costs and opportunities of saying yes to the true happiness that Jesus teaches.

We believe this will make a difference in our year and draw us closer to God and take us into the Lent season.
