Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous, all for your love’s sake. Amen.
~The Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington
In part, the preamble to the MCC Statement of Faith states:
We are people on a journey, learning to live into our spirituality, while affirming our bodies, our genders, our sexualities. We don’t all believe exactly the same things. And yet in the midst of our diversity, we build community, grounded in God’s radically inclusive love for all people. We are part of an ongoing conversation on matters of belief and faith, shaped by scripture and the historic creeds, building on those who have come before us. Our chapter begins when God says to us: “Come, taste, and see.”
We are indeed a diverse people on a spiritual journey individually and as a congregation. We come from many backgrounds and we worship in different styles, yet we come together as a beloved community of God to commune, to teach, to ask questions, to have theological discourse, and to rely on each other. Before service each week I pray that each person will receive something sent by the Spirit, a song, a message, a word, or a kind face, something that will help them to feel connected and encouraged to face the coming week. Any of these elements, along with communion and other rituals can be powerful instruments to accomplish God’s work in us and in the world.
This week we will be examining Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3: 13-17 as well as communing with that great cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 12: 1-3. The scriptures are a testimony to God’s power and God’s one-on-one connection through relationship. At Jesus’ baptism, the voice from heaven called Jesus “my own” and “my beloved”. We too along with the ancestors mentioned in Hebrews, are God’s own family, God’s beloved people.
We will be continuing our theme Real Life, Real Faith: Surviving and Thriving in the Real World. In that real world there will be disagreements and misunderstandings, there will be opportunities to show and receive grace and mercy. There will be times that no matter how hard we believe, what we pray and hope for does not come to fruition in our lifetime, if at all. In service we’ll be talking, singing and praying about the real world and offering a ritual of water for cleansing. Please join us for 9am or 11am service.

Call to Prayer and Update on proposed Development at 1200 5th Street by MidCity Development
Since our congregational forum with MidCity Development in September, the Board met in more detail with representatives of MidCity in November. Following each meeting our concerns were put in writing to MidCity and we requested additional information and commitments to mitigate the concerns raised. On December 30, 2019, MidCity provided a written response; however, key issues and concerns will require additional discussions and some information requested has not been provided. Given the significance of the development, impacts on MCCDC and the neighborhood, the outstanding questions and concerns, to preserve the interests of MCCDC the Board approved requesting Party Status in Opposition with the DC Zoning Commission. The hearing for the new development is scheduled for January 16, 2020 with a deadline of 14 days prior to the hearing to request Party Status. Party Status, if granted, will provide MCCDC with rights to present at the hearing, question witnesses, and be officially notified of any decisions or other actions.
To Review Official Submission On the Project CLICK HERE and enter case number 19-16.
To view a copy of the official filing in PDF CLICK HERE!
The Board intends to submit more detailed written testimony ahead of the hearing and will present our position at the hearing in January.
We invite and encourage all members and friends available, to plan to attend the hearing of the Zoning Commission scheduled for January 16, 2020 at 6:30pm, Jerrily R. Kress Memorial Hearing Room 441 4th Street, N.W., Suite 220-South Washington, D.C. 20001.
We pray and hope we will continue to be able to have dialogue with MidCity and through this process help mitigate the concerns and ensure the development is a benefit for our community and neighborhood.
We ask for all to be in prayer during this process for MCCDC, the community, and for MidCity that what will result is a development appropriate for our neighborhood. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to Rev. Dwayne, Rev. Cathy or any of the Board Members.

The Intercessory Prayer Team invites the congregation to “PRAY FIRST” for the New Year! Join us as we endeavor to start off 2020 in prayer by praying first in these five areas:
• Before getting out of bed
• Before driving or taking the metro/bus
• Before saying offensive or derogatory words
• Before making impulsive or important decisions
• Before going to sleep
We believe this will make a difference in our year and draw us closer to God and take us into the Lent season.
You can join us at intercessory prayer on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month in the Chapel. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Jules at enjoyingtoday@hotmail.com.
