“Love is the answer, hate is a cancer. Hope of forgiveness, it waters the soul. Our blood is red, we’re not so different’ Cause underneath our skin we’re identical”
~From “Mighty River” by Mary J. Blige
Sometimes we’re under water and we can see the light above the surface yet remain unsure of the breakthrough. Going under is scary. It can be disorienting. And breaking the surface doesn’t always mean we can breathe easy. In our Gospel from Mark 1: 9-15 Jesus comes up from the baptismal waters to see the glory of heaven splitting open and the Spirit descending. A voice proclaimed fullness of love for him. Yet at once after this high moment, Jesus was facing the great test of 40 days in the wilderness. At his baptism, had Jesus gone deep enough to face the depths of an attack on his very being?
At various times in our lives we face uncertainty. Will we have what we need when those times come? Attention to spiritual practices will help us build spiritual muscles. Yet sometimes unexpected waters will come rushing in from what seems like nowhere. Our voice may join with others who have said: “Nothing prepared me for this moment!” That’s when we pray that we’ve lived deeply enough up to that moment to face the new depths ahead of us.
Our Hebrew Scripture from Genesis 9:8-17 describes God’s promise to Noah and his family on the other side of the flood: “Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh” (v 15). However, the promise was not to end all floods. Indeed in 2017 the people of Puerto Rico continue to reel from the floods of Hurricane Maria. 400,000 are still without electricity. Yet the everlasting promise symbolized by the bow in the sky holds true, contingent upon the compassion and generosity of those able to help. God delivers God’s promises through God’s people.
As we enter our 40 days of this Season of Lent, we will meet the depths of joy, struggle, calm waters, rising waters, and the “Mighty River” that “cuts right through” and “never gives up” and is “so full of life” as described in the song by Mary j. Blige. This Sunday, Moving Spirit will bring both our Scriptures and the song “Mighty River” to life at 9 AM and 11 AM. See you Sunday as together we rise with the depths.

MCCDC LIVE STREAMING
MCCDC is live! We have an opportunity to use of our AV system to reach outside our walls to many people who may not be able to join us in person. To make this happen we must have a subscription service that will provide us the ability to stream our services, concerts and special events, and expand opportunities for participation in our bible studies and other activities remotely. The testing done so far with streaming has generated a lot of excitement, particularly by those who have been unable to visit our church.
You can be a part of making this happen in a number of ways: (1) pray for our reach beyond the walls of our church (2) join others in donating to cover the one-time annual cost of the service and associated AV training for our volunteers; and (3) consider joining the AV ministry.
You can contact the church office with questions at 202-638-7373 or email@example.com.
With EasyTithe, supporting the church is as simple as clicking a mouse or whipping out your smart phone.
Our new online system allows you to make a financial donation to the church with your credit card or direct debit from your banking account.
You’ll be asked to set up your MCCDC EasyTithe Account. You can set it up to make a one-time/anytime donation or make a recurring donation.
You also can give by text 202-999-3841. Please contact the church office with questions at 202-638-7373 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
