“Clinging to what you already know is the path to an unlived life. So cultivate beginner’s mind, move directly into your not-knowing, and take the risk of failing and falling, again and again-then getting up to learn again and again. That’s the path to a life lived large in the service of love, truth, and justice.” ~Parker Palmer from “On the Brink of Everything”

It is not fun to fall. It hurts to fail. Sometimes it is difficult to get up. Yet there is something to be learned with every fall, if you stop to examine. Sometimes the learning does not come immediately. Sometimes the failure itself is a mystery. Yet is it really failure if you learn something or grow stronger? Even if the strength feels like weakness?

In the Scripture for this Sunday from Exodus 24: 12-18, Moses is your teacher. He listens to God and goes through the effort to climb the mountain. The promise he anticipates is instruction from God to take back to the people. Moses expects an immediate response from God. He hopes to go down the mountain as quickly as he climbed it. Instead Moses is caught in a cloud cover. There is no beautiful view, just the vision at the end of his nose. It is only later that the glory comes. On the seventh day God calls to Moses out of the cloud. Then comes brilliant glory! Then the Lord appears!

Moses, captivated in this glory, couldn’t wait to go back down to share all he has learned and experienced. Yet God’s timeline is not his. Moses waits on the mountain for forty days and forty nights, knowing in part yet not fully knowing.

You too are called to wait, to sit with not knowing; at least not fully knowing. What is to be revealed with time? Keep sitting. Keep waiting. Wait and hope and learn and fall and fail again and again “until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your heart.” (2 Peter 1: 19b, alt.)

What you need will come. What you seek to know will be revealed in time. Then like Moses you will live a “life lived large in the service of love, truth, and justice.”

“From one mystery to the next and the next and the next,”

Help Us Observe a Spiritually Rich Lent

Lent is almost here-February 26 is Ash Wednesday-and it’s a special opportunity for all the creative, faithful writers (and would-be writers) among us to contribute to our community spiritual life.

Each day during the 40 days of Lent, members and friends will receive a devotional-a story (from your past or even one you create), a meditation on Scripture, a video, a poem, or a reflection about this time in your life and/or our lives together.

The theme for Lent this year is “Entering the Passion of Jesus.” You can choose to write in response to that, or you can choose to tell your truth even if it does not address that theme. The key is to submit it to Rev. Dr. Robin Hawley Gorsline, MCCDC’s Writer/Theologian in Residence, at writer@robinhawleygorsline.com (or you can send it to the church office and they will forward it to him).

Feel free to contact Rev. Robin by email or by phone at 240/565-3441 or email if you have any questions or concerns. And be sure to watch your inbox for your daily inspiration!

Intercessory Prayer Team, “PRAY FIRST” for the New Year! Join us as we endeavor to start off 2020 in prayer!

The Intercessory Prayer Team invites the congregation to “PRAY FIRST” for the New Year! Join us as we endeavor to start off 2020 in prayer by praying first in these five areas:
• Before getting out of bed
• Before driving or taking the metro/bus
• Before saying offensive or derogatory words
• Before making impulsive or important decisions
• Before going to sleep
We believe this will make a difference in our year and draw us closer to God and take us into the Lent season.
You can join us at intercessory prayer on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month in the Chapel. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Jules at enjoyingtoday@hotmail.com.
