Near the close of every MCCDC Sunday Worship Service we pray together “The Prayer That Jesus Teaches” that is more commonly called “The Lord’s Prayer.”
We are invited to join in the experience as community through song, sign, or by praying the words aloud or silently. This prayer is this week’s message text, and we get to slow down a bit, pause, consider the scripture, and notice our individual engagement with it. In the process we may wonder about the impacts of repeating the prayer every week. Does it become rote? Does repeating it deepen its meaning or does repetition reduce connection and attention to it? When did you first engage the text (never, two weeks ago, sixty years ago)? Are there parts of it that are particularly supportive for you? What is it like to pray this prayer together online, on-site, on demand, wherever and whenever you are?

This week we explore the version of “The Prayer That Jesus Teaches” presented in the gospel of Luke (11:1-13). Throughout Luke, we find a focus on the importance of prayer in the life of Jesus, so it is fitting that the disciple’s request of him for prayer instruction comes as he is just completing the act of praying (verse 1—Rabbi, teach us to pray..). And while Jesus gives instructions on the how, in doing so he invites the disciples, and us, into direct intimate contact and relationship with God-Abba-Parent through prayer. The presentation of this brief prayer, at the same time, focuses on our very human day-to-day lives together in this realm–bread, forgiveness, temptation. All of these necessary and/or crucial to ongoingly address for life and relationship with Creator, ourselves, and others–more than human and human–in community.

Please join us in community on Sunday, online, on-site, or later on demand as we continue to explore this shared sacred text together, and what messages it might hold for us today as MCCDC. You are welcome here.

Blessings.

Dr. Carla Sherrell

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #151

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories.” ~ Plato
Dear God, thank you for blessing us with diversity and inclusiveness in this Beloved Community, for we move and have our being in Christ Jesus. You are our strength and the “wind beneath our wings” helping us to grow stronger in faith each day as we continue sharing generously of the gifts you so generously gave us. Thank you for those precious moments that allow us to look within ourselves, ask honest questions and be open to what your Word reveals. Help us not to lean into our own understanding but to totally trust your Word, and obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for the faith to remain steadfast during chaotic upheavals threating our world as we are experiencing today. Bless the children who are separated from their parents, and the parents who are missing them. We pray that families can stay together in the home and the country of their own choice. O Lord, we know you are able.

We are grateful for our gathering worship space, and the many spiritual places of worship continuing to spread the gospel to everyone throughout the world. We are grateful to everyone for their gift of financial giving to further your work for the spiritual realm and helping to bring more souls into your Beloved Community. Thank you for guiding us through changes that enriches us to pray and glorify your name. We are grateful for your unconditional love and mercy. God, we are never alone for you are always with us. You give us the courage to keep moving forward when we do not see where the next step will take us; and for this, we thank you, in your many precious names. Amen.

“The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong…” This means that even if you are not the smartest, strongest, most knowledgeable or best looking in the natural, God can still give you good success when you depend on His grace.” Ecclesiastes 9:11 (The 1st Egalitarian Translation)
About

Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher and innovator of written dialogue and dialectic forms. He’s considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and one of the most influential authors in its history. Plato is known for developing the theory of Forms, which states that the world we experience is an imperfect copy of a perfect, eternal realm of Forms.
