BY FAITH: SPEAK LOVE TO POWER

For 45 years MCCDC has offered a powerful word to our community. When we were founded, our word to the community was unconditional: all are welcome, including the LGBT community. To same gender couples seeking God’s blessing on their relationships, the word of MCCDC was clear: love is love. In the 80’s and 90’s when HIV/AIDS took so many of our beloveds, the compassionate word of MCCDC was strong: God is greater than AIDS.
The word of MCCDC has been strong and clear through the years. Now, we are called to offer a strong and clear word as we move into our future. Our neighborhood, community, and world are in desperate need of the word MCCDC offers today. We are called to speak (or sign!) love as a countervoice to the powers of violence, anger, despair and hatred that permeate mass media, social media, and the shouting matches on sidewalks.
The scriptures for the message this Sunday speak of the power of words to bring death or life. In James 3:1-10 the scripture writer warns that words can create evil that spreads like a forest fire. Today, many of the fires raging in our world are fueled by the rhetoric of death cultures. The opposite is also true: “Blessing and cursing come from the same mouth” (James 3:10): our words have the power to bless.
Words also have the power to protect and guide our purpose. In Mark 8: 27-37, Peter uses his word to try to dissuade Jesus from his purpose. In response, Jesus uses his word to sternly correct Peter: “Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking God’s thoughts but human thoughts” (Mark 8:33).
Imagine a world where all words were created by God’s thoughts! At MCCDC, this is the world we seek to co-create with God working around us, in us, and through us. See you Sunday at 9AM and/or 11AM as we seek to grow in our ability to speak love to power.

MINISTRY CONNECTIONS
Opportunities to serve in ministry are plentiful. If you have a heart to serve and to be a part of something larger than yourself, please consider this your personal invitation to join in ministry. Where needed most:
MCCDC Choir – Consider joining the choir for the Christmas concert which will be held on Dec 4th and 5th. Please see our 11 am Music Director Tyrone Stanley for more information. Our 9 am choir has room for you. Please see our 9 am Music Director Daniel Scearce for more information.
Website Content – Many go to MCCDC’s website to learn more information, hear sermons, see pictures of our community even before stepping foot into our sanctuary. We are in great need of a volunteer to assist in this communications ministry.
Children’s Ministry – The Children’s Ministry provides a fun and safe space for children to learn about spiritual values, while valuing each child’s unique talents and abilities.
Hospitality – God’s hospitality extends welcome to the entire community, the Hospitality Ministry provides arms and feet to that welcome. The ministry is responsible for coordinating food and welcome during the social time.
Information Station – These faithful folks coordinate the sharing of information about ministry activities, events and directions. They extend the hospitality of welcome to everyone who has questions or require assistance.
AV Ministry – This Ministry is responsible for the sights and sounds in worship and other services in the sanctuary. If you feel called to investigate learning and participating in providing audio and video support, please pray about connecting.

CONGREGATIONAL FORUM TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
Saturday, September 12 will be an important day in the life of MCCDC. I invite you to be a part of it. Rev. Elder Don Eastman will be with us for a Church Planning Forum to help answer the question, “What are we called to do as a congregation?” We will meet from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. HEARTSONG RELATIONSHIPS RETREAT
Sometimes relationships with God, self and others can range from joyful to challenging, especially if you are not currently in a relationship. This workshop offers an opportunity to build tools and spiritual practices to be in a mutually fulfilling, healing, healthy and loving relationship.
When our hearts are joyful the entire soul rejoices. Ephesians 4:2-3 states “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CONTINUES
Let Us School You (And you can teach us a few things, too)
Adult Sunday School has restarted. It is held Sunday mornings between the two services from 10:15 ’till 10:45, in the lower-level conference room.
Our topic of discussion is an overview to Bible basics.
Bring your coffee and cookies. Sessions are short but pack a lot of punch.
It’s a great way to spend a half-hour – learn something new and fellowship, too.
All are welcome and wanted.
