“How we live becomes part of our conversation with God, and our words and actions form a response to our having been not only created, but loved.”

~ M. O’ Laughlin

Who you are matters to God. What you do to bring more love into the world also matters to God. That’s why God has chosen you. That’s also why Jesus chose the first disciples.

The scripture for the message this Sunday is from John 15:5-13. Jesus is sharing from his heart with his disciples and they are stunned by what Jesus says: “As the Creator loved me, I too have loved you.” (John 15:9). For the disciples, this is a radical shift in perspective. They have never had one in authority speak to them with such direct intimacy, drawing them in on a heart level. They were accustomed to bowing down to authority. Jesus was inviting them to a new way of thinking, being, and loving. Jesus’ call to them includes a call to think of themselves in a whole new way.

Jesus takes the paradigm shift a step further when he says “I have said these things to you so that my joy will be in you and your joy will be complete” (John 15:16). With incisive clarity Jesus is opening them to a life of joy. Out of their friendship with him and each other, their hearts would become the soil to produce the fruit of joy.

Preaching from this beautiful text this Sunday is MCCDC’s Wendy Hamilton. She is one of our Pastoral Care Ministers and tracking towards clergy credentials with MCC. I will be guest preaching at United Christian Parish in Reston, Virginia at 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM. I will return next Sunday to continue the Lenten series, “Live Well. Love Well.” For this Sunday, Wendy says she will be “talking essentially about how God’s love for us translates into love for others!” Don’t miss her powerful message of love at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

Alice Paul is credited as one of the leading figures responsible for the passage of the 19th Amendment (woman suffrage) to the U.S. Constitution. In her honor, the Equal Rights Amendment was sometimes called the Alice Paul Amendment. “When you put your hand to the plow, you can’t put it down until you get to the end of the row. I never doubted that equal rights were the right direction. Most reforms, most problems are complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about ordinary equality.” By Jone Johnson Lewis Women’s History Expert

MCCDC is going live! We have an opportunity to use of our AV system to reach outside our walls to many people who may not be able to join us in person. To make this happen we must have a subscription service that will provide us the ability to stream our services, concerts and special events, and expand opportunities for participation in our bible studies and other activities remotely. The testing done so far with streaming has generated a lot of excitement, particularly by those who have been unable to visit our church.

You can be a part of making this happen in a number of ways: (1) pray for our reach beyond the walls of our church (2) join others in donating to cover the one-time annual cost of the service and associated AV training for our volunteers; and (3) consider joining the AV ministry.
