In 2009, 2011, and 2013, MCCDC started the New Year with an invitation: to read the entire Bible in 90 days as a group. It was a joy to see many in the congregation begin the New Year with such a life changing opportunity. In all years we publicly celebrated the accomplishment of those who were able to see this through.

Looking ahead to 2015, let’s take the journey to a new level! I’m setting a goal for 90 members/friends of MCCDC to sign up for this 90 Day Challenge. To support you, there will be weekly meetings on Thursday nights starting January 8th, 2015 (so Tuesday Night Bible Study and Choir Members can attend) to support each other and discuss what we are reading. This will be especially helpful navigating the pages of Numbers!

Johanna ministered as Co-Lead for the program in 2011 and 2013 and has agreed to step up again for 2015!

We encourage you to get a copy of The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day Edition of the Bible. Copies are available wherever books are sold, and there are electronic and audible versions also available. You may use the 90 Day reading plan that works with any Bible. However, Johanna has noticed that people who use the 90 Day Edition are more likely to meet their goal. The 12 page per day breakdown makes the process doable.  Here are some reading tips to help get you started.

The reading will begin on January 1 and continue through Epiphany, Lent and Easter. All who complete the challenge will be recognized on a Sunday for this significant accomplishment.  Rev. Cathy and I will also host a Victory Celebration Party.

Some tips to get started…

Q: Should I be taking notes while I read?
A: If you want to, but don’t let note-taking slow you down. If you want to note something for later reference or highlight something to bring to the weekly groups, by all means do so. But, taking notes is not required.

Q: I’m curious about the lineages, should I write charts of them?
A: If you wish, but only after you have completed the reading for that day and if you have time. Again, the purpose is the read attentively every word of the Bible, you do not want to linger. Get through the reading first and, if you have time, and you wish, go back only then.

Q: It’s Day 5 and I’m already behind, should I give up?
A: No! Just read. If you can, add a few pages a day to the reading until you’re caught up or plan for some time maybe on the weekends to catch up. Don’t stress…just read.

Q: I didn’t get the official Bible in 90 Days bible, but I’m reading from another Bible, is that ok?
A: Yes. As long as you are following the scripture readings for that day.

Q: I’m returning to work today and I’m worried I’m going to fall behind. What should I do?
A: Stop worrying. Just read. With work, it may be a matter of getting into the right routine. Maybe consider reading part of the reading at lunch and the rest at night. Or if you have time in the morning, read. Or, read portions throughout the day during breaks or downtime. When you break it up during the day, you may want to stop each time at a natural break so you will not feel a need to go back later to refresh your memory.

Q: I can’t pronounce many of the names I’m reading, can I skip them?
A: No. The purpose is to read every word. Remember, you are reading to yourself so no one is listening to whether you’re pronouncing names or words correctly and frankly I think most people probably are going to have trouble pronouncing some of the names. I know I do.
